Calligraphy Lptus

Hello everybody! How are you doing?!

Today I want to talk about another artwork I did for a class. This one is the most recent of them all. I created this two weeks ago. It was a lot of work. But I made it in two days.

So I took a class that only lasted one week. An professor from Spain came to teach the class. So she was visiting for five days only. It was worth three credits, like any regular class. The thing is that I had to stay in the university from 5 to 8pm. If I had earlier classes then I would had to stay there the entire day. I practically felt like I was living there. For all the time that I had to spend there.

During the first day we started  the introductions. She showed us some of her art expositions she has made. The next day we brought some calligraphy tools. She taught us how to write in Neuland font. It is not as easy as you think. But practicing makes you better. The third day we were bringing up some ideas for our final project. On the fourth and fifth day I worked my hands off. Writing those letters were painful. But I still loved the end result. I found out that this was only the prelude to the ‘final project’. So in a matter of two months I have to make three more variants of this.

What did I use to make this specific work of art? Well I used:

  • Canson XL 12 in. x 18 in. watercolor paper
  • A carved bamboo calligraphy pen (made by the professor)
  • Black Chinese ink (special ink a classmate had)
  • Black pen
  • Dylusions ink sprays: funky fuchsia

How did I do it? I first marked the borders. I wanted to leave a noticeable frame around the image. Then I proceeded to make the lines to know where to write. To write in Neuland font you have to leave 3 1/2 marks, with the calligraphy pen you are going to use. I measured it and used those measurements to make the lines. Then I made the drawing, a lotus flower. I covered those drawing lines with masking tape to protect it from the ink.

This is the part were it got most difficult. I didn’t know what to write. So I made a quick google search and thought of writing the name of the drawing I made in various languages. One of the rules for the project was: there has to be a drawing and writing. And the other rule was, only the words can have colors and the drawings must be black and white. For me lotus flowers are pink, so I wanted to use such color. I had no calligraphy ink for pink. So I used the most closest thing I had, funky fuchsia ink sprays. It took me more than an hour to write all those words over and over again.

I was so tired on the fourth day that i finished the rest for the next day. Carefully I removed the masking take off the drawing. Not wanting to  accidentally smudge the drawing and ruin everything. I started to paint the lotus outlines with regular black ink. But the image didn’t pop enough. So I asked a classmate who was sitting in front of me to lend me a little bit of her special black ink. I am glad I did use it. Cause look how it stands out from the wall of fuchsia words. Then I realized there was something missing. I asked around for their opinion. And they told me draw some shade on it. With a black pen and a ruler I made small fine lines to simulate shading.

I am so happy I did this. Now I am preparing myself to make three more. But don’t fret, I already have made the frame and the lines to write on. The drawing for each one is ready and their colors have already been picked. All I need to do now is cover the drawings with masking tape. The only downside is that I don’t have that special black Chinese ink. I’ll need to find a good substitute for it.

There you have it. A class artwork I did just recently. Why didn’t I talk about a more older artwork? Cause I am proud of this, of my hard work. I just needed to show it to you guys. I think I will work on the rest of the project today. Just writing about it pumped me up to finish it as soon as possible.

Remember to give me a like and subscribe on my site or on any social media site that I am at. You can also visit me at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and now on Pinterest. Well I have a class to attend and projects to finish. Be nice to others and have a nice day.

See you all later and take care,

from Ijiserure.
