Art Project: Sketchbook Cover

Hello Everybody! How are you all doing?

Welcome to a new art project post. This time I attempted to decorate another sketchbook cover. It was something that I wanted to do. I love to personalize my journals. For me, art doesn’t stay only on the inside.
There many things that I do besides drawing. And this is one of them. I already own a lot of sketchbooks. Why not play with the covers too? It isn’t the first cover I’ve decorated. That is how the Blue Sketchbook became blue.

What did I do?

I took my Canson Sketchbook, and remove the cover out of the spring wires. Before doing anything I had to prepare the cardboard. The last time I painted a cover, over time the paint started to peel off. So this time around I was ready. I first applied a layer of gesso. With this on the paint would have something to hold on to.

Next, off I covered it with some black paint. Instead of using Dylusions Paints I opted for the Liquitex Basics Acrylics. I chose the latter because it left a glossy finish. There was no other particular reason why I did it for. And the effects were soon covered by another layer or supplies.

At this point, I didn’t know what else to put on the cover. I didn’t think straight ahead on my idea. But soon enough it came to me to add some melted crayons to the mix. It has been a while since I’ve melted crayons. So I’ve been itching to do it again. And this opportunity came to me.

Melting crayons is tricky. Either hold it in your hands or gluing it to the cover. I tried melting it in the microwave. In the end, I used a hairdryer. It took me longer but I had control on where the colors spread. The downside is that it was messier. You don’t know how many times the molten crayons fell of the board. And I glued it in place too.

As my last step, I covered it all up with mod podge. I did so to prevent the now cooled down crayon from smearing on any surface. Even if melted down, the crayon still works. I’ve already smeared crayon all over my desk. That’s when the idea came to me. I still think that I can do more on the cover, but for now I plan to leave it they way it is already.

These are all the supplies that I used:

  • Any cardboard cover Sketchbook (Canson XL Journal)
  • Crayola Crayons
  • Liquitex Basics Black Acrylic Paint
  • Liquitex Acrylic Gesso
  • Matte Mod Podge

I didn’t use a lot of supplies. The little I used went a long way. That means that I don’t need a ton of art supplies to create amazing artworks. It feels great to do something else besides drawing and coloring. Doing this takes away part of my stress. Don’t get me wrong, I love drawing. But I put a lot of pressure on myself to make sure that it comes out perfect. With these I don’t have to that much.

And there you have it a new creative art post! I want to create more art and more projects. Working isn’t always as colorful as you think. There other things I have to do like editing and writing. If it were for me, I would be painting and coloring all day. But my posts would never get done, as most of it is part of the boring work. At the end of the day, I am satisfied. Because my work is complete. No matter if it was fun or boring. I love creating my blogs. And I was productive.

Do not forget to give me a visit at The Senspirational ArtRoom. All I need is your support and now you can do so by going to my Patreon page. Or go to see my older drawings at DeviantArt. There are also many other sites that I am currently active. Never forget to add me at FacebookTwitterInstagramTumblr, and on Pinterest. Well, I’ll leave now. Be nice to others and have a nice day!

See you all later and take care,
