How to: Surviving A Long Flight

Hello Everybody! How are you all doing?

Today I want to talk about travel. As you all know I traveled from Puerto Rico to Canada. It took me almost 15 hours to reach the Pacific. Going on a flight was fun, but you have to be prepare for being in one too. I am not an expert about the topic, but I am writing out of my own experience.

On my trip to Canada I took 3 flights. Puerto Rico to Dallas, Dallas to Phoenix, and Phoenix to Vancouver. Each one was over 3 hours. The first flight was 5 hours long. What can you do while you are stuck in a plane for so long?

So I prepared myself ahead of time. Cause I knew I was going to have a rough time.

This is a list of thing that I prepared and brought with me on the flight:

  • Water bottle: Yes, I brought a reusable water bottle with me. I made sure to have it empty while going through security. This was a life saver. I kept myself hydrated thought my flights. No caffeine, no alcohol and no high sugary drinks. I could go and refill it at any drinking fountain in the airport.
  • Comfortable Clothes: If I was going to spend so many hours sitting down, I would rather do it in a more comfortable. I still had to carry my coat, scarf and boots with me. But as soon as I sat on the plane I would take those off. With my leggings and winter dress I was feeling like I was on my pajamas.
  • Neck Pillow: I didn’t needed it that much, but I was glad that I took it with me. My neck was much more comfortable with it than without it.
  • Taking a Nap: Somehow throughout the flight I was getting a little bit drowsy. But a nap is good to make time go faster. By the time you open your eyes, you might already be landing.
  • Entertainment: Do you think I will be entertained of looking at clouds for hours? That is why I brought my headphones and a long list of music to listen to. When I got tired of music I switched on to listening to an audio-book.
  • Changed Time-Zones: Before taking of from Puerto Rico, I set my clock to Vancouver’s time. I was tricking my mind to think that the actual time was Vancouver’s time. I don’t know if it worked. At least I knew what time it was when I arrived.
  • Passport and Plane Tickets: Since I the moment the plane tickets were given to me, I made sure to put it in a very safe place. But at the same time in a place where it were easy to find and grab. The last thing I wanted was to panic in the plane or at the airport.
  • Snacks: I am going to be honest, food on the plane is not that good. And food at the airport is expensive. Rather than suffering during your whole flight, I brought a snack with me. I forgot to bet some snacks, but I bought chocolate from the airport. I always wanted to eat some Toblerone. (Not Sponsored)
  • Window Seat: I don’t know about you, but when I book a flight where are only two seating options for me. Either you pick the window seat or the aisle seat. As far as I know, I do not like sitting in the middle. Being crushed in the middle by two passengers is not comfortable for me. And do not get me started on the legroom. If I take fights longer than 2 hours, expect me to book some legroom with it.

This is my first trip on my own. And there is room for learning and making mistakes too. But what I did on this flight are things that would never want to do again in my life.

This is the list of things that I did wrong on my trip:

  • Luggage: Fine, I will admit it to the whole World! I brought too much stuff. I had four bags with me. Two of them were my carry-on and my “personal item”. And the other two were sent as checked bags. They were all heavy as hell. You could see my misery as I had to “drag” my bags from point A to point B at the airport. My back and my shoulders were hurting for days. I have learned my lesson, I will only take limit total of 2 bags and they will not exceed over 25 pounds.
  • Jetlag: I failed to prepare myself from getting jetlag. Days before the trip, I was supposed to accustom myself to Vancouver’s time-zone. So I had to live 4 hours behind. But I didn’t do it. I didn’t even tried it. So when I arrived to Vancouver I was tired, sleepy and feeling like if I were drunk all day. I will make sure to try it out on my next trip.
  • Internet: This wasn’t much of a problem. But I did promised to my family back home that I was going to be in contact with them during my flights. I was unable to get online. At each airport you had to pay for Wi-Fi. In the end all my pending messages were sent as soon at I got some connection.

This is what I did to survive this trip. I thought ahead of time and prepared myself. Maybe I over prepared myself. Even with all that preparing, all my plans dissolved since the moment I landed. But now that I am here, I will take it one day at a time. I won’t rush. I still have a whole year to spend. Because of that I didn’t things that I never thought I’ll do. And I don’t regret it.

And there you have it. I almost survived this long trip. Now I am realizing that I have to take a long trip to get back home. I hope I have gotten rid of all the things that I brought with me. I don’t want to carry such a heavy bag ever again!
