Strathmore Watercolor 400 Series Review

Hello Everybody! How are you all doing today?

Welcome to my new review post. Today I decided to review one of my favorite art journals of all time. The Strathmore Watercolor Journal 400 Series. I loved using it through and through. The only regret was not using both sides of the paper. But that doesn’t make the experience any less. There are so many things that I wish that the journal would have. But in fairness it is still one of the best watercolor  journals I’ve ever used.

This journal comes in different sizes. But my favorite choice is the 8.5×11 in hardcover. I like this journal so much I bought myself another one. This time in soft cover, but it comes in a 7×10 size. I don’t mind. Both sizes are good for me. Not too big nor too small for my drawings. The paper is 300gsm or 140lb. So it can handle wet mediums and the abuse of burnishing of colored pencils.

Old and New Strathmore Watercolor Journals

I bought this journal back in 2017, it was in 2018 when I started drawing on it. Then in 2020, I began to paint my artwork. By the end of 2021 I finished all the drawings. I count that as success. I’ve never completed a sketchbook from front to back before. It only has 24 sheets, if you use both sides then you would get 48 pages. That is why it was so easy for me to fill it up. It is only half way used.

To honest I have mixed feeling towards this journal. I love the way it works and all but I also don’t like that these are some drawings that aren’t good enough. I let go of those feelings when I realize that you can see my progress. When I started painting my journal, I was learning how to use the my water soluble markers. And there is also evidence of me learning how to use mixed media with my colored pencils. Not every drawing there is a masterpiece, but a time capsule of my art progress.

These are the artworks I created in this journal:

I wish Strathmore had a journal for 500 Series Papers. But the 400 Series is a close best for me, journal wise. In third place is would be the Strathmore Mixed Media 400 Series with 100% cotton paper. But that is a review for another day. The journal is a bit pricey but it is worth it. I do not regret buying the second one. The question is, when am I going to start using it. That would be a while, there are a few more art journals waiting for me to try.

There you have it! A new art supply review. I want to post more of these. But first I have to test out more art supplies so I have something to talk about. All I can say is that this journal is good for me and what I use it for. Each supply can work with anybody differently. What works with me could be a disaster for you, but that is the reason I keep on trying new journals. I want to find all the supplies that works with my art style so I don’t miss out on any creative improvement.

So please wish me good luck and I hope you have a nice day!
