Hello Everybody! How are you all doing?
Today I want to talk about Puerto Rico, again. But this time it is about all the things that you should eat. Our cuisine is very creole style. There is so many meals formed with rice and beans, and your meat roasted or pot roasted on the side. Our food tastes so great that why bother going to a local fast food joint. You can come and taste test what we have to offer, on the table.
Here is the list of foods you should try:
Alcapurrias – Made with paste of yautía, plantains or cassava and stuffed with ground beef or crab meat. It is then fried until golden and crunchy croquette. This is part of the Puertorican menu since the times of slavery
Bacalaítos – On or off the coast this appetizer adorns the small showcases of the places where they sell fried food. But the taste for it has modified it to smaller dimensions and that way it is present even in elegant cocktails. It is made with salt cod and it looks like a large, fried and flat pancake.
Rellenos de papa – Whether it’s breakfast for a student who’s in a hurry or a snack for a worker, stuffed potatoes are a classic street food. Stuffed potato is a deep fried ball make out of mashed potatoes and in the center is filled with meat.
Piononos – Filled with ground meat, this food is one of the many ways Puertorican cuisine uses plantains. It is like a banana split instead of bananas and ice cream, you add plantains, meat and cheese.
Viandas con bacalao – One of the dishes that exemplifies our mestizo cuisine for the use of cod. We adopted this dish from the Spanish culture. Only with an addition of the viandas that are part of the Afro-Caribbean roots.
Mofongo – It’s prepared with plantains. First is it is friend then mashed. Most of the times prepared with with a touch of fried meat, fried chicken and the broth. Served on the side with seafood or fried meat.
Pasteles – There are many Latin versions like Mexican tamales. The difference is that these are made with cassava or plantain mass. The fillings are also variable thanks to the use of chicken or pork, red pepper, olives and in some occasion raisins.
Asopao – Asopao is a soup with rice in it. Sometime prepared with beef, pork, chicken or shrimp. It can either be homemade or sold in an authentic “Criollo” restaurant.
Sancocho – Another soup style dish. Perfect for when it is rainy and cold outside. It is the type of food that you can all different types of vegetables and meat in it.
Pernil Asasdo – This one is my favorite. It can me prepared all year round, but it is a tradition to serve this during the holidays. It is a pork thigh seasoned and roasted until the skin is all crispy.
Morcilla – Morcilla is a mild blood sausage. Made with the pig’s intestines and stuffed with rice and blood. Served in the holidays but can eat it all year round.
Artisan Ice Cream – You must try the artisan ice creams. In some local ice cream shops you can find unimaginable ice cream flavors. For example there are: rice ice cream, bean ice cream and corn ice cream. But if you are more into “normal” flavors then try the coconut ice cream, rum and raisins or oatmeal ice cream.
There are still more food that you should try but the list is long. Some that I want to mention are:
Longaniza – That is another sausage but made with pork or with chicken.
Mondongo – Another soup made with cow or pig tripe.
Tembleque – A gelatinous coconut pudding.
Dulce de coco – It looks like a soft scone, but it’s prepared with sweetened coconut shavings.
Sorullos – They look like cheese sticks, but they’re made out of corn meal. You can stuff it with cheese, make it sweet or salty. They are perfect for party snacks or for breakfast.
And the list goes on. This will never end. At least with this you now the basics for puertorican cuisine. I’ve could have mentioned “Tostones” or “Arroz con dulce.” But it is too much. I don’t want to give you a food overload. When you came here, you can discover on your own other things to try. I am such a meanie for posting this during lunch hour. Now you want to eat this and not what you had planned.
