Tips: Keeping A Travel Journal

Hello Everybody! How are you all doing?

Today I want to talk about journaling. Now that I am traveling and far away from home, I want to record all my adventures. One day I want to look back and remember all those memories. So I make sure to have a journal with me to jot down whatever I see, feel or experience.

There isn’t a perfect way to record all the things you do. We have photos, video, writing, and more. That doesn’t guarantee that you will be immersed in the past. If I could take my memories from my head and store them somewhere. It would be easier to show to people. But that kind of technology doesn’t exist yet.

This is the reason why I have a travel journal. I write down ever of everything. I write about my day, food, activities, shopping, tours or about the people I meet. This can not get any more real. A bit more and the next step would be a documentary.

These are my tips to create some good travel journaling:

  • Currency: When I travel I like to collect a bit of the local coins. I would take it as a keepsake. It is a small reminder of their money and cultural details carved in them.
  • Receipts: When you go somewhere you might want to save some receipts. I see them as an evidence of where I have been and what I got. To preserve them and avoid them from fading, I laminate them with clear tape. Now I can read the things that I bought from 3 years ago.
  • Vouchers: When I go on a tour or on a ride I make sure to save the vouchers. Some of them are like receipts and others work like a brochure.
  • Brochures: No matter where I go or visit, I make use to grab a brochure. They have a lot of information about the place you have visited.
  • Maps: Like the brochures, I like taking the maps. It is an easy way to have a lot of information without the need to write it down. Anything with images and information is 100% okay with me.
  • Mini Envelopes: I like mini envelopes. I can stick it to the journal and put my coins in them. Or whatever items I collect during my travels. I like the yellow envelopes. But the clear plastic mini ziplock are great. You can see the items without the need to open it up.
  • Stamps: If you collect international stamps then you are doing a great thing. Many stamps have images and national icons in them. Who wouldn’t want to get a stamp with images of places that you have visited?
  • Photos: The best way to record and put in the journal. Make sure you are in the picture too. Some people would want to appear in their own pictures as a proof that they were there. I like using my Instax Mini. Miniature photographs to jot down in my journal.
  • Color Pens: You need some pens to write down your adventures. To make it even more fun you can use various colors. It is cool too if you are into doodling. Make it unique and exciting.
  • Postcards: It is like a picture of the place you went to. I made sure that the postcard I got represents the place I am visiting as a whole. A picture is worth a 1000 words.
  • Business cards: Like before, I would go to any place and collect their business card. Someday, I might want to go there again. It is a good thing that they have their contact info and how to get there. They have things that I won’t be able to remember forever.
  • Tape/Glue stick: I would take both with me anywhere, like the pens. You don’t know where or when you will need them. It is unpredictable to tell when would it be the next time you’ll find something that you want to stick to your journal as soon as you see it.
  • Take it with you: I tell you to always take your journal with you. If I don’t have it with me, I am bound to forget to write something from the moment.
  • Do it daily: When I come back from my adventures, I sit down and put my journal together. You won’t have something new and exciting every single day. But it creates a routine and it helps your journal too. I’ve spent weeks without touching my journal. I was so behind.
  • Have fun: Don’t take this too seriously. It is a journal to keep it your memories. If it feels like a chore to keep this journal, then this might not be a thing for you.
  • There is no such thing as mistakes: Sometimes you can write the wrong thing down. But you can turn it around and make something out of it.

So there you have a new creative post for the Creative Diary. Wow, I recently started working and I am tired all the time. I am kinda surprised that I still have time to write my posts. Well doing this is my top priority. Everything else comes third. Traveling and having fun is my second priority. Traveling and art is my life. How can I go and put that aside?
