Creative Practice: Watercolors

Hello Everybody! How are you all doing?

Welcome to my new post! This is a creative and spontaneous post. I want to talk about watercolor and all the things I have to go through. A few years ago I’ve gained an interest in watercolors. Years later I am still trying to be better at it. It is always challenging for each drawing I paint.

Today is the beginning of a new month. With it, I want to start practicing something new. I placed watercolor on the back burner. Work and life have kept me busy. But the time has come where I should start honing my skills more.

I’ve been online watching tutorials as if my life depended on it. All about watercolors and how to use them. There are important things that I want to know. What is the best paper, brushes, paints, and palettes? In conclusion, I don’t have any of those things. My supplies are academy/student quality. To get some of the best supplies I would have to invest almost $100.

So I was ready to commit to buying some expensive art supplies. Until I realized that it will take me some time to learn how to use them. I don’t have a reliable package delivery place. And I don’t have a desk to work on. After a second thought, I decided to buy it later. I do want it but now is not the right time.

What can I do to get better at water-coloring? I still have some watercolor journals. They aren’t considered watercolors, but I use the Zig Clean Color Pens. They are markers with water-soluble ink. That is my so-called watercolors. I do have the Winsor and Newton Cotman. But I don’t like them as much as I thought. The pens have a more vibrant pigment, and that is what I like.

If I have a student grade supply like water-soluble markers, then I have to pair them with something of their same caliber. So I have a Canson XL Watercolor Journal. I don’t have the paper pad, but the one with the spiral. At least it has 30 pages with 140lb paper. Little by little I notice that all my supplies are garbage. This is why I want to start from 0.

For now, I have to work with what I have. If I want to master something, I’ll have to perfect my skills by using low-quality supplies. Nothing more, nothing less. Now I can accept that my Zig Clean pens are not good for my Strathmore Paper. And I am not going to buy Arches to use the Zigs on it.

This is what I’ve done so far in my watercolor journal:

On the first page of the journal, I tested different kinds of painting supplies. First I tried with the Winsor and Newton Cotman Watercolors. Is it me? Cause I don’t like how it looks on the paper. It might be normal, but I don’t like it.

The second one I tested was the Zig Clean Color Pens. I like how it looks. It looks bright and colorful. This is one of there reasons why I love these pens. Out of all three, this was the winner. I would be using these more for practicing.

The last one was the Dylusions Ink Sprays. I don’t use these for coloring. But sometimes I use them to compare the vibrancy of colors on the page. Their pigments can rival the pens. Sometimes I use them pretending that they are the Dr. Ph Martins Radiant Watercolors.

Because the pens were the winner, I made a full swatch of the pens. I have 80 of them. So coloring isn’t that difficult when you almost have every color you can imagine. That hardest part is that I can’t draw more color out of the pens.

What supplies to I want to get? I was planning to buy: Arches Hot Press Paper. It is the best watercolor paper so far. The Silver Brush Black Velvet. I need at least 3 good brushes. A porcelain pallet and for watercolors. And I have been wanting to get Dr. Ph Martins Radiant Concentrated Watercolors.

Now let us see how this will go. I’ve never practiced my watercolors like this. I hope I get better at this. Or at least I get some good art supplies soon. I’ll watch some more tutorials so I won’t miss a thing. So far, Watercolor Misfits has been my guide.

And there you have it, a new creative post. I wish I’ve known all about this a decade ago. Right now I am like a beginner trying this all out for the first time. I am going to take this practice very seriously. I want to be and feel like a pro at the end of this. So please wish me all the luck.

Do not forget to give me a visit at The Senspirational ArtRoom. All I need is your support and now you can do so by going to my Patreon page. Or go to see my older drawings at DeviantArt. There are also many other sites that I am currently active in. Never forget to add me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest. Well, I’ll leave now. Be nice to others and have a nice day!

See you all later and take care,
